The Livelihood Condition of the Puthirai Vannar Community at Thiruthangal

The main aim of the consultation is to explore the broader challenges faced by the Puthirai Vannar community in accessing basic infrastructure, education, employment and identify their specific needs and demands that need to be addressed or analysed through further research. With this objective the consultation was conducted in Thiruthangal Municipality in Virudhunagar district holding significant population of the Puthirai Vannar community on June 11, 2025. Before the consultation the CSJE team went for field visit to three wards in Thiruthangal on June 10th 2025 to understand the various issues of the Puthirai Vannar Community.

Research Team visited three hamlets at Thiruththangal namely,

  • Kannagi Nagar
  • Gurpooth Colony
  • Periyar Colony

The Issues Identified

  • caste certificate
  • Puthirai Vannar Welfare Board
  • Un employment among youths
  • Patta and housing and
  • Infrastructure facilities such as toilet, bus, and road services

After the Consultation Meeting two focused Group Discussion were done with the community people

On the next day, Consultation meeting and Focued Group Discussions on the Livelihood Condition of the Puthirai Vannar Community held at Thiruthangal.

  • Suggestions Submitted

    • Women require skill training in tailoring, embroidery, and other income-generating activities such as ironing, basket-making, and driving.
    • Cottage fireworks work is common; further research on Sivakasi’s cracker and printing industries is needed to create employment and business opportunities.
    • Limited public transport access increases demand for driving training and financial support to purchase cars or share autos.
    • The community needs awareness and consultation programs on Puthirai Vannar Welfare Cards, benefits, and access to community certificates.
    • Basic infrastructure gaps persist, especially water access, toilet facilities, and high demand for free patta and housing within Thiruthangal or nearby areas.
    • Common burial-ground issues highlight the need for an electronic crematorium in Thiruthangal or structured burial grounds across locations, along with further research on youth employment training.
