Masimagam Festival Plan and Irular Cultural Festival Celebrating the Cultural Life and Traditions of the Irular Community Mamallapuram

A consultative meeting was held at MSSW College on 12 February to coordinate the leaders of the Irula community across Tamil Nadu and to undertake preparatory arrangements for the Masimagam Festival scheduled to be held in 2 March 2026. A total of 25 community leaders participated in the meeting. During the discussion, a Masimagam Festival Coordination Committee was formally constituted to oversee and organize the festival activities.

International Mother Language Day – Safeguarding Linguistic Diversity

International Mother Language Day, observed annually on 21 February, served as a globally recognized platform for promoting linguistic and cultural diversity. Proclaimed in 1999 by the General Conference of the UNESCO and subsequently endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002, the observance has evolved into a significant international initiative advocating language preservation, multilingual education, and cultural rights. The adoption of Resolution A/RES/61/266 (2007) further institutionalized global commitments toward safeguarding endangered languages.

“Union Budget 2026–27: Through the Prism of Inclusive Growth”

The Centre for Social Justice and Equity at the Madras School of Social Work (MSSW), Egmore, organized a panel discussion titled “Union Budget 2026–27: Through the Prism of Inclusive Growth” at the VC Hall, MSSW, on Monday, 16 February 2026, from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The discussion brought together eminent scholars and media professionals to critically examine the Union Budget 2026–27, with a central focus on its implications for inclusive growth and social justice. Dr. Pavananthi Vembulu, the Director, CSJE welcomed speakers and clearly explained objective of the panel discussion Dr. Srinivasan Ramani, Deputy National Editor, The Hindu, Chennai introduced about concepts of budget such as revenue and capital. He mainly concentrated on role of capital budget in development of country.

Commemoration of SOCIAL JUSTICE DAY Screening of the short film “Kayiru”

The Centre for Social Justice and Equity, Madras School of Social Work, organized a commemoration of Social Justice Day. As part of the observance, the Centre facilitated the screening of the short film Kayiru, aimed at fostering awareness and dialogue on issues of social equity. The event was graced by the special guests, writer and editor of the book Kayiru, Mr. S. Saravanan, and the film director who made the film Kayiru, Mr. I.G. Rajesh Kumar. They shared their views on the themes depicted in the film.

Commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025

This report captures highlights of the proceedings, outcomes, and reflections of the two-day event “Commemoration of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples”, organized by Centre for Social Justice and Equity – MSSW under the direction of Tribal welfare directorate, Government of Tamil Nadu with Madurai Government Museum, M.V. Muthiah Government Arts College for Women, Dept of folklore of Madurai Kamaraj University as Collaborating partners alongside. The International day of World’s Indigenous Peoples serves as a global call to action for the rights and dignity of indigenous communities. The day honours their enduring contributions to cultural diversity, sustainable ecosystems, and community-centric living, even as they continue to face systemic exclusion, marginalisation, and ecological displacement.
