Socio – Economic Survey of Scheduled Tribes in Tamil Nadu

The growth of India’s tribal communities has been studied from a number of perspectives. Due to the constantly shifting external social conditions, it has been determined that regularly accounting for the scheduled tribes and investigative their socio-economic status is essential.
The population of tribes seems to be behind in all areas of development. Numerous factors may attribute to their backwardness yet, their socio-economic status, place of residence, and remoteness are the main causes. As a result, one could determine their vulnerabilities with regard to livelihood, education, and health. As per the 2011 census, in Tamil Nadu, there are 2,04,916 tribal households and 7,94,697 tribal populations spread across the state. This represents 1% of the state’s total population. The Centre for Social Justice and Equity at Madras School of Social Work has projected that the tribal population in Tamil Nadu will be around 10 lakhs and there will be 2,60,000 tribal households. After the survey tool was prepared by CSJE and MSSW, the pilot survey was executed by the NGO named ‘Arulagam’ in the months of April and May 2024. Three districts, those are Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode have been considered for the pilot study, and 3000 households will be covered for the study. In each district, 1000 people will be covered.
