Understanding Social Justice and Equity – A Socio – Political Perspective

The MSSW Centre for Social Justice and Equity has scheduled a session on “Understanding Social Justice and Equity – A Socio-Political Perspective” for September 19, 2023, in VC Hall in commemoration of Social Justice Day. Honourable Justice.D.Hariparanthaman, a former judge of the Madras High Court, and Ms. Arulmozhi, advocate and social activist, were the seminar’s special guests. The main guests were presented by Mr. Anthony Stephen, Co-Ordinator of CSJE, MSSW, who also described the seminar’s objective.
Advocate.Arulmozhi began by outlining the context of social justice in India, and specifically Tamil Nadu. After a brief explanation of the distinction between equity and equality, she moved on to the data from the Sangam literature to figure out the perceptions of education and work division. She had expressed her thoughts on how education in our culture was taken away from the working class and given to the so-called upper caste people. The relationship between labouring and caste group hierarchies was explained from the perspective of social justice.

Public lecture

Comparative Understanding of Caste System in India and Japan

The Madras School of Social Work, Centre for Social Justice and Equity conduct a public lecture on “Comparative Understanding of Caste System in India and Japan” for January 30, 2024 TAG Auditorium. Honourable Speaker – Prof. Jonathan Watts Moderator – Mr. Gouthama Prabhu were the public lecture special guests.
Public lecture begun with the welcome address by Dr. Pavananthi Vembulu, Director, Centre for Social Justice and Equity, Madras School of Social Work. Then, the speaker was felicitated by Dr. Raja Samuel, Principal, MSSW. Later, Mr. Gouthama Prabhu, President, Foundation of His Sacred Majesty (NGO) gave brief introduction about the speaker and his profile. After the introduction, the speaker Prof. Jonathan Watts delivered his lecture.

Invited lecture

“Impact and Historical Review of Social Justice Movements in Tamil Nadu”

The centre for Social Justice and Equity of Madras School of Social Work, conduct a invited lecture on Invited Lecture on “Impact and Historical Review of Social Justice Movements in Tamil Nadu”” for February 02, 2024 VC Hall. Honourable Speaker – Ms. V. Geetha Social activist the invited lecture special guest.
The session was initiated by Stephen sir, who introduced the guest with a profile reading, Ms. Geetha who is an active member in various women’s movement was the spear of the session. Following the introduction director of the centre spoke briefly and introduced key concepts the speaker had been influential in coining such as anti-caste pedagogy and pedagogy of self-respect then the speaker started her presentation.

Monoact play

The mono-act play “Innuma Nadakudhu?” on April 26, 2024, was organized by Theatre of Voices in collaboration with the Centre for Social Justice and Equity at Madras School of social work, the play took place in Madai – Alwarpet Chennai. The special guest is writer and novelist Mr. Imayam participated. The play aims to create awareness about caste-based violence, specifically addressing the issue of honour killings.
