Dr. C. Maheswaran is the former Director of Tribal Research Centre and the former Curator of Department of Museums, Government of Tamil Nadu. He has worked on the indigenous speech varieties of Pachaimalai Malayali Tribes (of Tamil Nadu), Kui-Kandha Tribes (of Odisha), Betta Kuruba Tribes (of Karnataka) and Adiyan Tribes (of Kerala) and published extensively in the fields of Comparative Dravidian, Lexicography, Dialectology and endangerment of indigenous cultures and languages. Prof. T. Dharmaraj is Professor of Folklore at the Department of Folklore and Culture Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. He is an Associate Member of the Folklore Fellows, an International network of Folkloristics, Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, Turku. He carried out an ethnographic study on a tribal community called ‘Kaanikarar’ and produced a documentary film on the community. He was involved in collecting tribal and folk visual motifs for a project on ‘Ethno semiotic study on visual representation of folk crafts and arts’ to IGRMS (A museum of Mankind), Bhopal. | |
Dr. Sam Mohan Lal was Professor cum Deputy Director at the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Manasagangotri, Mysore. He was also a Visiting Faculty at Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur and in the University of Nanjing, China. He supervised the linguistic and cultural documentation of the Tribal languages spoken in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He has published on Urali tribe and its language and Pattola- Paniya Pre School Primer. | |
Prof. Anvita Abbi is an internationally acclaimed linguist and social scientist for her work on indigenous languages. She received Padma Shri in 2013 from the President of India and the Kenneth Hale Award from the Linguistic Society of America in 2015 for her lifetime contributions to documenting Indian languages. She identified a new language family—the Great Andamanese—a moribund language that is key to understanding the peopling of Asia and Oceania. She has widely published in language typology, language contact, multilingualism, and grammars of tribal languages. She taught Linguistics for almost four decades at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. At present, she is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Linguistics, at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada and serves as a member of the Expert Committee of the UNESCO World Atlas of Languages. | |
Professor Minati Panda is the former chairperson of the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University and she is currently the Director of the National Multilingual Education Resource Consortium (NMRC), JNU. She has been a recipient of both the Fulbright and Commonwealth awards. She was the director of the prestigious JNU-University of Cambridge programme on multilingualism and multiliteracy. She has published extensively in the areas of culture and everyday cognition, multilingual education, language, etc. She was the advisor to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Government of Sri Lanka for multilingual education. Professor Panda was a visiting scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University, Manchester University, University of California San Diego (UCSD), Heidelberg University, Hamburg University, University of Western Ontario, the University of Cambridge and the University of South Australia. | |
Dr. Rajesh Kumar is a professor of linguistics in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. He obtained his PhD in linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining IIT Madras, he taught at IIT Kanpur and IIT Patna in India and at the University of Texas at Austin in the USA. He has been a visiting faculty at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai in India. His book on Syntax of Negation and Licensing of Negative Polarity Items was published by Routledge in their prestigious series Outstanding Dissertations in Linguistics in 2006. He has been associate editor of the journal Language and Language Teaching. | |
Prof. A.R.D. Prasad is former Professor and Head, Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC), at Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore. Professor Ramesh C. Gaur is presently working as Dean (Administration), Director & Head- Kala Nidhi Division at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. He is a Fulbright Scholar and is the first Indian nominated as Member- International Advisory Committee (IAC) UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) Programme (2018-2025) as well as Member UNESCO Global Task Force on Indigenous Languages (2020-2032). Prof. Gaur has also served as member of Expert Consultation Committee for setting up of International Centre on Documentary Heritage (ICDH) in South Korea and Consultative Committee on Digital Dunhuang, China. He was also the First Indian appointed as Chair International Federations of Library Associations (IFLA) Advisory Committee on Cultural Heritage for period 2021-2024. Dr. M.D. Muthukumaraswamy has been serving as the Director of the National Folklore Support Centre, Chennai since its establishment in 1997. As the Director of NFSC he led the prestigious folklore projects such as documentation of oral epics of India, visual art traditions of India, establishment of community archives for indigenous communities, and Fellowships in folklore. The projects were funded by the Ford Foundation and the Tata Trusts. The centre successfully completed a community archive project for Narikuṟavar(Vagri). He has lectured at numerous universities in India and abroad and holds senior visiting professorships at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. | |
Dr. Nerupama Y. Modwel is Principal Director, Intangible Cultural Heritage Division at the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). She has overseen the successful completion of a number of research, documentation and workshop projects on performing traditions, indigenous arts, folklore, oral narratives and histories, culinary heritage, as well as extensive cultural mapping along the Ganga River in UP and Bihar, and documentation of the living culture of heritage cities like Varanasi, Gaya and Prayagraj. She is coordinating an ongoing programme of studies on tribal communities across the country. Previously, Nerupama taught at the University of Delhi and Rajasthan University. | |
Dr. Sujoy Sarkar is a Lecturer and Junior Research Officer at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in Mysuru. Since March 2016, he has also served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Scheme for Protection & Preservation of Endangered Languages at CIIL. Sujoy completed his MPhil focusing on the medium of instruction in primary education for the Toto tribe. He defended his doctoral dissertation on “Linguistic Human Rights and Language Discrimination: A Critical Study of Language in Education Policy for Tribal Education in India.” His research interests encompass various aspects of language education, including: Language Issues in Primary Education for Tribal Areas, Language Policy and Planning, Linguistic Human Rights, Language Endangerment and Revitalization. | |
Dr. C. R. Sathyanarayanan was former Joint Director, Anthropological Survey of India and on a short deputations served as Deputy Director in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India and as Director of the Tribal Research Centre, Ooty, Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. During service in Anthropological Survey of India, he conducted extensive field studies among the tribal communities in the Nilgiris –Wayanad areas and Anamalai hills of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mrs. Vasamalli is an eminent Toda writer, poet, social activist, archivist and researcher. She has working on a Toda dictionary and her publication “Maarum Ulagil Maraiyaa Oligal: Thodar Vaaimozhi Ilakkiyathin Oru Thoguppu” is the most authentic as well as critically acclaimed work on the life, culture and literature of Toda community. Dr. Tarun Chhabra is the founder of the Toda Nalavaazhvu Sangam and the more recent Edhkwehlynawd Botanical Refuge (EBR) Centre Trust. He is engaged in conserving the traditional heritage of the indigenous Toda people. He has authored over eighty papers, book chapters and articles, that culminated in the magnum opus, The Toda Landscape: Explorations in Cultural Ecology (Harvard University Press; Harvard Oriental Series, vol 79) in 2015. He is a member of the IUCN-SSC Western Ghats Plant Specialists Group. | |
Dr. Odiyen Lakshmanan is an independent researcher working extensively on Irula language. He has compiled and published Sappekokal, a collection of indigenous Irula songs accompanied by historical narratives presented in short story format, preserving and sharing cultural heritage of Irulas. He has recently released an audio album titled Emthu Naadu Male Naadu, featuring traditional Irula songs enhanced with original musical compositions, celebrating indigenous music. He is actively involved in preserving indigenous languages, ensuring their continued use and transmission to future generations. |

Research Associate of Centre for Social Justice and Equity of Madras School of Social Work has completed her master’s and M.Phil. degrees in women’s studies. She did her doctoral research on ‘Women and Water: Problems and Possibilities of Water Governance – AMicrostudy in Tamil Nadu’ and awarded her Ph.D. in 2019. She has two years of experience as a Research Associate at the State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (SIRD & PR) of Government of Tamil Nadu in the period of 2018–2020, in which she has engaged with action research projects primarily focusing on gender and Sustainable Development Goals. She has been engaging in gender sensitization training programmes, menstrual hygiene management trainings, and sexual harassment against women. She had teaching experience as guest lecturer in women’s studies at Bharathidasan University and University of Madras for two years. She has published research papers and journals on gender and water governance. She has also produced documentaries on the themes of marginalised communities includes dalits, tribes, and women. She has participated and organised various national and international conferences.
Mr. M. Antony Stephen is the lead facilitator of Social Entrepreneurship Incubation centre (SEIC) in MSSW and responsible to take care of the entrepreneurship among Tribals, Marginalised Communities, Person with Disability and Artisan Sectors and build their eco system. He is heading Social Entrepreneurship Hub funded by Entrepreneurship Development Innovation Institute (EDII), Government of Tamil Nadu to promote social start up ecosystem in 60 Social Work Colleges in Tamil Nadu. He is the convenor of Consortium of Social Enterprise organisations in Tamil Nadu. He is a member of Tamil Nadu Palmyra workers welfare board, Government of Tamil Nadu. His research areas are Entrepreneurship ventures among migrants and marginalised communities, Social Entrepreneurship Education and Governance Entrepreneurship. He has visited Cambodia, Philippines, Burma, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Spain, Germany and Omen. He is the regular writer on issues pertaining to homeless community in leading newspapers and social media.
Research Assistant of Centre for Social Justice and Equity of Madras School of Social Work has completed her Master’s in Sociology at the University of Madras in 2014. Presently, she is pursuing her interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme in sociology and criminology. She has teaching experience as a guest lecturer and Assistant Professor at Chennai Dr.Ambedkar Law College, PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore. Before joining the CSJE, she worked as a Research Associate at Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur. She has worked on different research projects on the themes of criminology, victimology, sociology, and gender studies. Her significant projects are the impact of violent crimes in Nagpur City, the social exclusion of manual scavenging communities, and gender dimensions of the urban labour market. She has published articles on different subjects in the vernacular magazines. She has also participated in various national and international conferences and presented research papers.
Mr. G. Ramkumar, Documentation Officer, Centre for Social Justice and Equity, Madras School of social work. He has two and half years of full-time teaching experience at Madras School of Social Work as well as two years as guest lecture at College of Social Work, NirmalaNiketan, Mumbai. He has worked in HandinHand, NGOs for a year. He is pursuing his Ph.D in Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, working on Dalit movements in western part of Tamil Nadu. He also completed his M. Phil from the same institute on local governance and Dalit leadership. He has participated in the both national and international conferences to present papers. He has a publication. His interest areas are social movements, exclusion studies and civil society.
Dr. R. Pavananthi Vembulu completed his Ph.D. in European Studies from the Centre for European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He teaches Political Science at Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India. Earlier, he was at the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, ManonmaniamSundaranar University, Tirunelveli. He was European Union Visiting Fellow at University of Bath, UK (2011); and German Science Foundation Visiting Fellow at Justus- Liebig University, Giessen, Germany (2012). Ms.Semmalar Selvi is a scholar and academician in social work who have worked meticulously in various themes on ‘Dalit Studies’. She has presented papers and participated in various National and Regional conferences, seminars on the themes of ‘Gender Equity and Inclusion’, ‘Election Democracy’, ‘New Education Policy’, ‘Human Rights’, ‘Women and Violence’. The centre presently collaborating with her on ‘Studying Post Matric Scholarship Scheme for SC Students in Tamil Nadu’. The present study aims to understand the difficulties faced by Scheduled Caste students in accessing post matric scholarships with specific to Engineering colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu.

Dr. K. Ragupathy, a historical researcher in Tamil Nadu has been working on the areas of scheduled castes and their origin in Tamil Nadu. He has authored the books “Theendamaikkul Theendamai” (an exclusive book for the marginalised scheduled caste group of Puthirai Vannar in Tamil Nadu), “Dalit Podhuvurimai Porattam”, “Dalitugalum Thaneerum”, “Dravida Madham”, “Dravida Pathirikkaigalil Adidravidar Aavanangal” and so on. He is a veteran historian in Tamil Nadu who write multiple number of articles in news dailies for voicing out the atrocities against the scheduled castes in Tamil Nadu. We are collaborating with him for studying the “Caste Atrocities against Scheduled Castes in Tamil Nadu from 1990 to 2023”. The present study aims to find out the statistics on atrocities will be gathered from the reports of National Scheduled Caste Commission and Tamil Nadu Police Report.
Managing Trustee, Vanavil Trust
Vanavil Trust was started in 2005 in the aftermath of Asian Tsunami of 2004 to support children of two Nomadic communities, Boom Boom Mattikarars and Narikuravars, in Tamil Nadu. After 18 years of working with the communities, Vanavil now has grown into an organisation with multiple projects that are aimed to support the education of the children from the nomadic tribal communities. Vanavil stands for Child protection, Health & Nutrition, Holistic education and Livelihoods. CSJE, MSSW has collaborated with the team ‘Vanavil’ for Studying the Nomadic Tribes in Tamil Nadu in particular to the Census of Boom Boom Maatukarar (Aadhiyan) Nomadic Tribe in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu.
Ms.M.Priyachitra has completed in Master‟s in History, M.Phil. in Archaeology at University of Madras. Presently, she is pursuing her interdisciplinary research in Women‟s Studies. She was the research fellow of ICSSR fellowship in the year 2018 – 2020. She has worked in different research projects in associated with ICSSR, Centre for Developmental Studies. Her noteworthy projects were the Educational Challenges of Scheduled Castes in Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu Migration Survey. She has also organized and participated in various national and international conferences and presented research papers.
Mr.SankaraPandi K, Documentation Assistant at the Centre for Social Justice and Equity, Madras School of Social Work, Chennai. With over 5 years of teaching and research experience, he holds a Master’s degree in Applied Economics from Pondicherry University and Master’s degree in Population Studies from the International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai. His Ph.D research focuses on Industrialization and Socio-economic Mobility. He registered his Ph.D with the Madras Institute of Development Studies and received the ICSSR Institutional Fellowship for the years 2015-2017. He is good at handling and analyzing large-scale data and is also well-versed in documentation.
Ms.Niranjana is a M.com graduate and has a wide range of work experience in the private sectors and private limited companies. She has a rich experience accounting and auditing. She looks after the financial matters of the Centre

Mr.Yadeendar from the Department of Sociology and Social Work if Christ (Demmed to be) University, Central Campus, Bengaluru. He has done his internship in the month of April, 2024. He had worked on violence against Dalits, gender mainstreaming, and tribal concerns as broader themes. The readings focused on the Forest Rights Act, 2006 and its implications for Tamil Nadu, analysing the place of transgender representation in political campaigns, and fostering public dialogue to raise awareness of atrocities against Dalits. On April 26, 2024, in Chennai, he also directed the theatre production of “Innuma Nadakuthu” –A Solo act play in the theme of ‘(Dis)Honor Killings in Tamil Nadu with his teammates.
